Scavenger

You found me
Gasping and wounded
Numb from pain

You said you could help me
Bring me back to life
Cure the hurt inside

You covered my eyes with one hand
As the shock of death set in
Then fed on my injured soul

When I had nothing left to give
You abandoned me for dead
To scavenge your next prey

But I wasn’t a wounded deer
Numb and stupid on a forest floor
Facing a gruesome death

I am a blazing phoenix who was
Going through my own immolation
And transformation

I emerged whole and strong
Filled with fire and light
And rage

I thought, once, to thank you
For helping me cross
The threshold to power

But instead, I offer a warning
Stay far away
Or you will burn
